Manifold Pleasures



What goes in really needs to come out, and the LaFrance is no exception to the process. Inlet manifold is missing the 2 5/8" up-draught Stromberg carb which was in pieces on the 'bench - sorry. Real simple engineering here, but elegant of course and very exciting, obviously. If you can stand the fun, there's a good glimpse of the Scintilla mag. In the exhaust pic that looks remarkably like a 190 Cosworth in the background which may appear later on in these pages.

  1. Nice steering box as well. At some stage long after yours was built and even after my 1948 Land Rover, the steering box seems to have died out in favour of something called rack and pinion. Maybe it was because the coloumn speared too many lunatic drivers. Never mind speed humps and speed cameras. Re-introduce the steering box, preferably with a spike to aid penitration.

  2. Oh yeah - with you there. When the LaFrance was chopped around for touring duties the steering box was rotated about 10 degrees to give a much shallower rake to the column and a more sensible seat height - you really want the column aimed midway between your chin and your sternum - sudden death.

  3. You two may go on about rack and pinions and steering boxes, but I know that the manifold in the top picture is really the divil's horns, sent to ensnare us all.

  4. Quite right, Squire. I wish those two would start talking about love boxes instead of steering boxes. As a poof, I haven't got the faintest idea what they're on about half the time.
