Series Wiring

Ah- yes well, hello again. Bit distracted lately and frankly my brain hasn't been up to this malarkey. Series is ready for MOT any minute but it became apparent that years of abuse and dodgy "add-ons" have taken their toll in the electrics department. A minor fire both sides of the bulkhead gave us the clue that all was not well. With the help of a cup tea and a very quiet expert accomplice, things are nearly back to normal. I share this picture with you in the hope that you may be encouraged to tackle some long-postponed tidy up; mental, social, financial, electrical or even structural - these challenges can fester and often prove to be surprisingly enlightening and enjoyable when the "lid" is off. I particularly recommend sharing the experience, that way you've somebody to blame if it all goes up in smoke. By the way - I've about had it with Ambridge - thank God the trial's over, Rory seems to have lost the power of speech, the cricket season's started and Mat Crawford's been handed the opportunity to upset everybody on a plate. MORE POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE.

Welcome back Diplo, great pic and it's good to see that you've taken up smoking Fluxite again.

The cup of tea....was that used to put the minor fire out? Any particular type better than another?

'shop tea tends to be PG tips as it's the brand of choice at my local village stores. Home brew would more likely be Yorkshire Gold or Twinings English Breakfast - a pack of Earl Grey could be found and pressed into service, quite shallow and milkless with a slice of lemon, at intervals in the croquet season. As for putting out fires - whatever comes to hand.

Lovely goggles. You may have seen my recent ebay purchase on Jeep Blog. I love a good pair of goggles. Believe me, your wiring looks efficient compared with that on my LR, blending looms from 1970, 1982 and subsequent additions by me.

There's nothing like blending a loom.

Stadium Mk VIIIs by the look of 'em. Goggles are the very making of the motorcyclist (or open-top car driver). Mr Ashley's are to be envied as modeled in his latest tome and Mr. Toby's are worn with great panache. The old MCM tips page used to offer up such gems as 'a slice of potato rubbed on the inside of the goggle lens will prevent them misting up' but misremembered years later by a motorcycling chum who substituted raw onion, provided a dramatic redeye effect. The Capstan packet looks temptingly full of the little beauties by the way.

I'm not really a welder.

Now I thought you could do anything. Best stick to loom blending then. And leave the welding to Miss Camilla.

"I'm not really a welder"...Yes!! Perhaps THE greatest one line finish to ANY joke ever!!!!!

Alois I salute you for recognising that one. You're right, it's the best pay-off line ever.

And of course we've now just ruined the story for anyone who hasn't heard it. Sorry everybody.

Welcome back Diplo! I raise a glass of decent Barbera to your wonderfully impenetrable post!

Yes - well I AM a welder, if that helps, but i try not to be seen out&about in my goggles, certainly not accepting lifts from strangers.

At least, Mr Diplo, you are not from Preston.

Diplomate said...

Oh Lord - I am actually, does that matter ?

Affer said...

I'm a little shocked there, Camilla. I think that might be the punchline to quite a rude joke....

I love to relax into a spot of welding. Gas preferably. But on a more serious note, surely thats not an original Series 2a gear lever? It looks as though you would bash your knuckles on the dash doing a swift change from 4th, down to 3rd.

the transmission and engine are '70s series 3 lightweight military (e-bay £110.00). Actually the gear lever from the original 2A is identical apart from the Knob and clears the dash no worries.
